Distractions abound at work, but few are as bothersome as an uncomfortable seat.
No matter where you work—office, home, or a coffee shop—an uncomfortable seat can be a real hassle. A quality seat cushion can provide an easy and cost-effective solution. To determine the best options, we researched scientific studies, consulted a spinal surgeon and a physiatrist, and tested various cushions with people of different body types, focusing on firm, medium-firm, soft-gel, and budget-friendly choices.
Who this is for
When you need firm support: Tempur-Pedic Seat Cushion

Tempur-Pedic Seat Cushion
Firm support for better posture
This contoured cushion is made of thin yet dense memory foam, promoting better seating posture compared to flat alternatives. At 2 inches thick, it adds minimal height.
Best for: Those who prefer firm support and posture assistance over extra cushioning and height will appreciate this cushion.
How it feels: Sitting on the Tempur-Pedic Seat Cushion is akin to perching on a block of sand that gradually molds to your body.
Why it’s great: Testers found the Tempur-Pedic cushion to be “very firm, with stable support,” making it the firmest option among those we evaluated. Half of our testers praised its consistent support, with one noting it required the least adjustment compared to other cushions.
The cushion’s solid structure encourages a more upright posture, reducing the need for constant repositioning during extended sitting. While it doesn’t offer the same level of cradling as Tempur-Pedic mattresses, it still provides slow softening and supportive comfort.
Measuring 16 by 16 inches, the cushion fit comfortably on all three chairs tested. Additionally, the stretchy nylon and spandex cover is removable and machine washable for easy maintenance.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
The Tempur-Pedic cushion features built-in cradling grooves designed to position your hips correctly while seated. However, some users may find this aspect uncomfortable or constricting.
While it excels as an office chair cushion, we wouldn’t recommend it for long car journeys due to its lack of an anti-slip bottom. (That said, previous testers didn’t report this as a significant concern.)
If you’re looking for a seat cushion that adds considerable height, the 2-inch-thick Tempur-Pedic cushion may not meet your needs.
Tempur-Pedic does not allow returns on this cushion, but it does provide a five-year warranty.
Dimensions: 16 by 16 inches
Type: Tempur memory foam
A great medium-firm option: Cushion Lab Pressure Relief Seat Cushion

Cushion Lab Pressure Relief Seat Cushion
Where height meets comfort
This medium-firm coccyx pillow provides tailbone relief and added height, available in two sizes.
Best for: The Cushion Lab Pressure Relief Seat Cushion is ideal for those needing added height, medium-firm cushioning, and relief from tailbone pain, as well as anyone sitting for long periods in uncomfortable chairs.
How it feels: It feels like a firm, pressure-relieving pillow that retains its shape.
Why it’s great: Available in standard (18 inches wide, 4 inches of memory foam) and large (21 inches wide, 5 inches of memory foam) sizes, the cushion offers personalized comfort. One tester noted the memory foam molds to the body without forcing an upright position, providing excellent support.
Designed as a coccyx cushion, it features a cutout to alleviate pressure on the tailbone, making it suitable for those with tailbone pain. Both sizes come with a removable, washable cover and a nonslip bottom, enhancing versatility. The larger size is about $14 more, which may benefit those over 210 pounds or who prefer a medium-firm feel.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
While coccyx cushions are great for most individuals with tailbone pain, they may occasionally place additional pressure on the sides of the sciatic nerve. It’s advisable to try these cushions before purchasing or consider a seat cushion without a coccyx cutout.
The large version of this cushion is 3 inches wider than a standard office chair seat, so measuring your chair prior to buying is recommended.
Dimensions: 18 by 15 inches (standard) or 21 by 18 inches (large)
Type: Memory foam
A gel cushion for softer seating: Medline EquaGel Balance Cushion

Medline EquaGel Balance Cushion
Malleable and supportive
This thick yet lightweight gel cushion provides solid support for individuals weighing up to 300 pounds. However, its 18-inch width may not fit some smaller chairs.
Best for: The Medline EquaGel Balance Seat Cushion is ideal for those who enjoy gel cushions but prefer a firmer feel. It’s particularly beneficial for individuals with tailbone pain, older adults with less muscle mass, and larger body types.
How it feels: Sitting on this cushion is reminiscent of being on tightly packed jello.
Why it’s great: With 2 inches of honeycomb gel and a width of 16 inches, this cushion effectively distributes weight for solid comfort. It supports individuals weighing up to 300 pounds, offering better structural support at higher pressures, especially for larger body types. Testers noted its consistent support compared to similar products, along with being lighter and cooler during extended use. The cushion includes a machine-washable cotton cover with anti-slip grip, making it user-friendly and practical.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
The Medline cushion is tailored for standard adult wheelchair seats (18 inches wide), but it may extend over the front of some desks or dining chairs. This issue occurred in only one of the three chairs tested, so it’s advisable to measure your chairs before buying.
Dimensions: 16 by 16 inches
Type: Gel
The best cheap seat: Xtreme Comforts Large Seat Cushion

Xtreme Comforts Large Seat Cushion
Comfortable and affordable
This seat cushion is larger and offers more cushioning than others tested, making it a great value for plush comfort at a low price. However, it’s not suitable for those with tailbone or sciatic pain.
Best for: The Xtreme Comforts cushion is ideal for those seeking a cooling and comfortable upgrade for their seating at under $50.
How it feels: It’s thick and soft, allowing you to sink into it comfortably.
Why it’s great: Compared to other budget options, the Xtreme Comforts cushion is plush, stays cooler longer due to its vented cover, and provides immediate comfort without adjustment. At 19 inches wide and 3 inches thick, it fits all tested chairs seamlessly.
Testers appreciated its discreet appearance, with one noting its soft, attractive cover that blends with the chair. The removable, machine-washable cover adds to its convenience. Xtreme Comforts also offers a one-year return policy and satisfaction guarantee for added peace of mind.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
The Xtreme Comforts cushion features 3 inches of thick foam that offers a squishy, buoyant feel rather than the firm support of memory foam. As a result, it lacks tailbone and sciatic support. Its wider design means you should measure your chair to ensure a proper fit.
While it stays cooler longer than other budget options, it can still heat up during extended sitting. You may need to get up occasionally or consider a more breathable cushion.
Dimensions: 19 by 17 inches

Other good seat cushions

For a gel seat cushion that fits wider chairs, the Purple Double Seat Cushion is a solid choice, measuring 16 by 18 inches. It offers excellent breathability, durability, and easy washability, providing good tailbone support with two firmness levels.
However, it didn’t make our top recommendations this time because the Medline EquaGel Balance Cushion performed slightly better in all categories. Testers also found the Purple cushion took longer to adjust to than preferred.
How we picked and tested

Over three months, we researched available cushions and consulted experts to determine key features of a great ergonomic seat cushion:
- Versatility: The cushion should be portable for use in various settings, like the office or car, and should fit standard chair sizes (17 to 20 inches wide).
- Diverse Sizing: We prioritized cushions that received positive reviews from users of varying heights and weights and preferred those available in multiple sizes.
- Machine Washable: Cushions with removable, washable covers were favored, though easy-to-clean inserts were a bonus.
- Supportive Yet Comfortable: We sought options that provided comfort for prolonged sitting without being overly rigid or too soft, which could exacerbate issues like sciatica.
Using these criteria, we tested multiple cushions with eight individuals of diverse body types and weights (130 to over 200 pounds) who primarily work while seated. I also tested each cushion personally for several hours to gather insights.
